Westminster

An area in central London within the City of Westminster, part of the West End, on the north bank of the River Thames, is Westminster. Historically lay within City & Liberty of Westminster's St Margaret's parish, was the area, Middlesex. Green Park, a Royal Park of London is bounding Westminster to the north.

From about 1200, the Palace of Westminster, became the royal residence that was principal, a transition marked by financial records and royal treasury transfers from Winchester to Westminster. Thus London found two focal points: Westminster (political and cultural) and the City of London (financial/economic). Formed part of Middlesex's Westminster City and Liberty, is the Westminster area.

The combined vestry of St Margaret and St John (also known from 1855 to 1887 as the District Board of Works of Westminster), which was located from 1883 in Caxton Street at Westminster City Hall, was the local authority, until 1900. Also included St Martin in the Fields and several other parishes and places, is the Westminster Liberty, governed by the Court of Burgesses of Westminster. Formed the historic core of Westminster was the former Thorney Island, the location of Westminster Abbey.

Westminster has seen by the 20th Century residential condominiums that are rising with inhabitants that are wealthy. Often refers to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, in the Palace of Westminster UNESCO World Heritage located - known as the Houses of Parliament also, was Westminster, in a government context. Indicates that it had a population as large as that of a small village, is St Margaret's Westminster for the servants of the palace and of the abbey who could not worship there.

Westminster School, a major public school which grew out of the Abbey, and the University of Westminster, attended by over 20,000 students, are within the area. Recorded within the area the full range of capital brackets and income living in adjacent streets was Charles Booth's poverty map showing Westminster in 1889; (by 1850) had become the Tyburn's southern flood channel ravine (stream) Devil's Acre, yet along other small streets and Victoria Street and squares had London's highest social class colouring, gold/yellow, is its central western area.

Within the area there is a typical distinction of Central London property which is very acute, epitomised by 21st-century expansions that are grandiose, high-point listed buildings and nearby (mostly housing that is non-council) social housing buildings founded by George Peabody, philanthropist, of the Peabody Trust, though with the clearance, Westminster has shed the poorness that is abject and with improvement to drainage. Though the Middlesex sessions also had jurisdiction, Westminster had its own quarter sessions. Casually used as a metonym for Parliament and the political community of the United Kingdom, is "Westminster", with its focus in public life from early history.
